Cedar shake siding can last for years and looks great with a little care and maintenance. It is one of the easier siding products to keep up with a little know-how and effort.

Remove Mold, Lichen, and Dirt

Dirt and exposure to the elements can make cedar shake siding begin to fade to a grey color. The bottom edges can begin to develop areas of green lichen and dark mold. You can turn the clock backward and make the siding look as good as new with a couple of easy cleaning steps. First, mix up a gallon of water with 1-tablespoon liquid soap and 1-cup bleach. Spray it onto the surface of the siding and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Rinse it off with water and see the results. You can use a soft-bristled brush to remove any stuck on dirt, mold, or lichen. Repeat the rinse process for a nice tan-colored look.

Never Pressure Wash

You should never pressure wash any siding on your home. You will drive water up behind the siding and can damage the surface. Use a garden hose turned to low pressure or a bucket of cleaning solution and water.

Replace Missing or Broken Pieces

Replace any broken or missing pieces of cedar shake siding to maintain the integrity of protection from the elements. Check each area carefully to inspect for cracked and broken siding pieces.
